A graduate of University College Cork, he completed his initial training in Munster, before working for a number of years in Dublin and Galway. He subsequently undertook a clinical fellowship in Diabetes in Ninewells Hospital Dundee, Scotland.
Speciality areas of Interest: All forms of diabetes (Type 1, Type 2, secondary diabetes, genetic forms of diabetes etc) and thyroid disease (overactive, underactive and difficult to treat cases). He also sees patients with other less common forms of endocrine disorders. Dr. O’Sullivan is a member of the National Diabetes Clinical Advisory Group
Research: Dr. Eoin O’Sullivan has published in a wide range of areas including diabetes, hyponatraemia and pituitary disease. His MD was on the mechanism of vascular calcification (blood vessel wall hardening) in type 2 diabetes. He has over 30 PubMed listed publications and presented over 50 abstracts at national and international meetings.
Teaching: A Senior Clinical Lecturer in UCC, Dr. O’Sullivan is involved in the teaching of medical students and Non-Consultant Hospital Doctors in the Bon Secours and Cork University Hospitals.
She then completed post graduate medical, and sub-specialty Endocrinology training in the UK. Following this she completed a second residency in Internal Medicine at St Raphael’s Hospital, Yale University School of Medicine, USA and a Fellowship in Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism at Brown University School of Medicine, USA.
Dr. Durkan is a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, a Diplomat of the American Board of Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
Dr Durkan was awarded a Masters in Clinical Education NUI Galway in 2012 and is former Dean of Academy , NUIG School of Medicine. She has relocated to Cork where she is now a Consultant Endocrinologist at the Bon Secours Hospital and Cork Diabetes & Endocrinology Clinic. She has also been appointed Senior Clinical Lecturer, in UCC School of Medicine.
She is actively involved with clinical research and has consistently had her papers accepted annually at both the American Diabetes & American Endocrine International scientific meetings. She has been an Internal Examiner for the MD Thesis Program at NUI Galway, and is a peer reviewer for the Irish Journal of Medical Science.
She sits on the UEMS (European Union Committee for Medical Specialities) ,Division of Endocrinology and has just been appointed by UEMS to CESMA ( Council for European Specialists Medical assessments . She is also an active member of many International Societies.
She is an active member of the National Diabetes Clinical Advisory Group , currently Chairman of the Diabetes division of the Irish Endocrine Society and a Co – Chair of the National Committee R3i (Residual Risk Reduction) Ireland. She sits on the National Diabetes Clinical Advisory Group , and is a former member of the Committee of the Irish Endocrine Society. She has recently joined a National Group implementing a national lipid Screening/ management Program.
